The unit saw on 15 May the first-ever transplant performed in Spain on a COVID-19 survivor. The underage patient, who suffered from a congenital heart defect known as mitral stenosis, had recently recovered from an infection of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes the pandemic COVID-19 disease when she received the heart transplant. Before the complex surgery, she was tested twice within 48 hours using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect antigen presence; both tests turned out negative for the disease, ensuring she had completely recovered from her viral pneumonia, according to the unit’s head, Dr. Joan Balcells.
